I have been reading Tarot cards for over 30-years. My first Tarot deck was a present from a family member keen to encourage my young interest in all things occult and mysterious. I still remember a great sense of wonderment in encountering the Tarot for the first time; the cards seemed both new and exciting but also oddly familiar as though I had in some way known them before. I was drawn to the curious images, and rather than a flat picture each card seemed to be a unique world to travel into and get to know: images full of meaning to be explored and unlocked.
The cards are of course exactly this, for the symbolism contained with them are signposts to understanding both oneself and the situations of others; they are archetypes of human experience. Rather than being something inaccessible or disturbing, the Tarot should be seen as a summing up of our shared emotions and life-challenges, predicaments we all face in life's tumultuous landscape. The cards have been a constant companion for me and although I put them down for a couple of years here and there I always returned to them, like an old friend.
A Tarot reading enables a stillness and a reflection, for rather than 'fortune telling', which seems in some way a prescriptive and inescapable outcome, a good Tarot reading is an opportunity to acknowledge the present scenario, it’s inherent influences and pressures and, with the light the cards throw on the situation, enables us to make meaningful decisions on available solutions and pathways open to us.
